Teach Them While They're Young

By Andre Hansen

You have seen them, the small cowboys and cowgirls that are horses before they could walk. They develop a love of horses and riding long before anything else. They need to be taught as early as possible a way to look after a pony and pony's appliances.

Like you would teach them to do their chores in the house, you should teach them to do their work out in the stables with the horses.

Little kids can be taught the main parts of the saddle. They do not necessarily have to understand what the other parts are to be ready to ride the horse. As the kid is learning to ride, they need to learn the parts that they're going to use the most at the time. They are in fact using all the saddle but you don't wish to overwhelm them with the names of all the parts.

You also do not wish to have the cinches too tight because this is often uncomfortable for the pony. The pony won't be content or cooperative. If the cinch were to break, then you could have an accident that may be devastating.

Knowing that the cinch is employed for keeping the rigging on is one thing. This understanding of the difference is what should be taught to children. Don't tell them that it could be bad if the saddle cinch isn't tightened properly. They can also lose their horse to improper use of equipment.

You have taught them the love of riding a horse. You have enjoyed watching as they became assured in controlling an animal so much bigger than themselves. Now it's time to be sure they know the parts of western saddle and the way to use those parts.
