Riding Your Bike in Idaho

There are over 19,000 miles of bike trails in the state of Idaho. In an area thats known for its mountains and rivers, you can expect some spectacular riding! Because of harder winters and wet springs, the best time to ride is usually summer or early fall. Here are a variety of trails that Idaho has to offer for riders of every skill level.

Beginners may want to start on an 11-mile loop not far from Pocatello. This trail-referred to as the Valve or Pump House Trail in the Mink Creek Recreation Area-is a long simple trek that can help build riding endurance without too many technical challenges. Don't forget to bring water, though, and stay hydrated.

Near Stanley, intermediate riders will enjoy the 12-mile loop called Elk Mountain. If speed is more your style, head over toward Ketchum to the Bald Mountain Downhill trail. You can climb the hill yourself and tackle this 10-mile loop, but with an elevation gain somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 feet, you may just want to opt for the $15 chairlift ride to the top. Coming down is an incredible rush! Don't try this one without a full suspension bike, and you'd better plan ahead by packing extra tubes and a repair kit, because you never know when you're going to need them. Nearly impassable during the wet season, the Bear Pete Trail is a great ride during dry late summers or early in the fall and the trail runs 19 miles. Located near McCall, you'll encounter a steep climb uphill but will be rewarded with views of Oregon and the Saw Tooth Mountains for your efforts. The decline is also tricky, so this one is also an adventure for the more experienced rider. And at the end of the trail, you can relax at the hot springs resort you'll discover there!

Would you like to have your art well known and be able to sell to a lot of people? Do you want to quit your day job and work only on your art?

In order to accomplish the above feats, you have to get your name out there consistently. You need to be very noticeable and attract lots of attention. This isn't as hard as it may seem, read on for a very simple but effective method to accomplish the above while also helping your fellow creative friends and making your community prosperous.

An example of such a scenario is the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. The neighborhood started out in ruins, an unsafe area to be in, and since the artists moved in, over a period of ten years, it has become prominent, attractive, secure, well known and prosperous. When artists go into an area and start creating, the area stops going downhill. The empty building are leased or sold, the area gets renovated and commerce proceeds and expands.

With the recession going on, you may have noticed that there are empty buildings in your area. The buildings may be office buildings, car lots and shops in strip malls. The best use for the empty spaces is for creative endeavors, don't you agree? Can you imagine artists creating in every single empty building space?

You don't need a lot of money to start such a project. And the benefits are not just for you personally, but for a group of artists, too, and for the community surrounding. It has been done many times, and it does work.

2. When you have gotten together a group of artists to assist you, you will need to create a presentation pack. It's not an expensive and complicated pack.

4. Set up a meeting with the owner or agent and do a presentation. Say that you are with a group of artists who want to do something to get the building leased - that will make the owner or agent interested.

8. Start Creating.

First you need to bring in some art already done, to give the salesperson something to sell. Then you make your studio space ready, by bringing in all the things you need to paint, sculpt, etc. Attention will be on your location because as one creation of art inspires the next, wonderful energy will be created. The person in charge of sales only has to sell, and the artists only have to create.

9. Do not give up!

These are the most important items in your pack. Applicable to both dayhikes and backpacking trips, these will improve your safety, comfort and quality of your outdoor adventure.

Obtain a map of where you will be hiking. Usually, you can pick one up at the park visitor center or ranger station. You can also download maps from various websites. Having a good map will not only will not only prevent you from getting lost, but it can help rescuers find you if you suffer an injury.

A map reading compass will help you find your bearings and keep you from getting lost. Using the map and compass together will keep you correctly oriented to know which direction you're heading.

Always carry two, one liter water bottles. Two liters is the minimum daily intake but chances are you will require more. Hiking is a physical activity and through perspiration, exposure and climate you can become dehydrated quickly. Bring some type of water purifier with you. For personal use, I take liquid treatment with me. Although you can survive a month without food, you will only last a few days without water.

Take a bit more food than you think you will need, to get you through an extra day if need be. This can easily be accomplished by having a few whole food bars with you, each of which constitute a complete meal replacement. Important for maintaining energy output.

A few more layers of clothing for comfort and safety. Temperatures can drop unexpectedly or at nightfall. If you hike through rain or fall into a creek, having only one layer of wet clothes when it starts getting colder can spell disaster. Make sure to wear synthetics as they are more insulative when wet and dry quickly.

Take a flashlight with you. You may want to purchase a headlamp so that you can be hands-free. Every once in a while, you will be out a bit later than expected. Negotiating a hiking trail in the dark is dangerous.

Have a personal first aid kit and know how to use everything in it. Suffering an injury in the wilderness is no fun. You can assemble your own with supplies from home, but include triangular bandages and moleskin or mole foam. You may want to consider taking a basic wilderness first aid course.

On rare occasion one must light a fire in the backcountry as a matter of survival. I've been on a kayak trip where someone overturned and they were soaked just as the temperature started to drop. Do not light a fire unless absolutely necessary. Bring matches and a lighter in a waterproof case and use caution to avoid wildfires.

A folding camp knife will serve many a purpose. Be sure that the one you choose has a blade that locks when open. I've seen knives that don't lock take off finger tips.

Don't forget the sunblock. Bring some sunglasses as well and you may want a cap with a visor or brim for extra UV protection. Your skin and eyes will be much happier.

Joe Crede has been magnificent at third base for the Twins in 2009. Not only is his fielding percentage the best in the AL, but he also has the least errors at the position. In addition to this, there's a stat called the UZR, which measures a player's effectiveness at a position relative to how many runs it costs his team. Crede's UZR here is best of breed.

Crede has been very valuable to this team, not only because he has provided some power at 3B (something lacking in the Twins lineup since the days ofCorey Koskie), but because he has beengoldenat 3B (possibly a career year at 3B).

As far as the UZR is concerned, there's a more telling stat called the UZR 150. This essentially tells you how many runs a player has either saved or cost his team over the course of his last 150 games played at that position. Crede's UZR is unbelievable, somewhere between 25 and 30. This means he's saving the team a run once every 5 or 6 games. No one else comes close to this defensively in the AL, only Adrian Beltre, whose UZR is 10 less, between 15 and 20.

It'd seem that Joe Crede should be a shoe-in for the Gold Glove at 3B. All of his stats beat out the competition. Somehow, no one really seems to know what he's accomplished at the position.

In conclusion, Crede has benefited this team in so many ways. Crede has provided power in 14 HR to the middle-bottom of the order...Crede has the highest fielding percentage in the american league (.985) with only 3 errors committed. Crede ranks at the top of all third baseman in UZR and UZR/150 saving an average of 25-30 runs.

Crede should be the hands down favorite for the Gold Glove, and I'm going to predict that he won't win it. It's the nature of the beast when it comes to these things.

The Twins seemed to get snubbed for these awards every year. Save for Morneau's recent MVP award, there have been quite a few worthy fielders in recent years who haven't won the award. Castillo, Morneau, and Mauer, to name a few.

The voters for the award are far from objective, and this unfortunately shows. With a small market team like Minnesota, it's hard to get the "pull" that the bigger cities have.
