Dustin Nippert Looks Good for Rangers

By Colin Ransby

Dustin Nippert revealed his argument for retaining the number 5 spot in the Texas Rangers' starting rotation of pitchers in the team's 5-2 win against Toronto in the first portion of Tuesday's double header. Next in line, Brandon McCarthy, coming back for his 1st because departing the rotation in June for the inactive list.

Nippert displayed far superior control than in his previous outing last week at Yankee Stadium. In the Bronx, he surrendered eleven base runners (four hits, seven bases on balls) and was only responsible for eleven outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he got out of trouble to earn his 5th victory of the season and third as a starting pitcher. Nippert gave up five hits, and walked merely one. He lessened his ERA as a starting pitcher to 4.43 and on the whole to 3.91. It was his third respectable start in his prior five games.

Nippert insisted there really wasn't a lot variation concerning how he threw last week and on Tuesday: "Just able to throw strikes. In the Bronx, I believe I threw one curveball successfully. The bigger dilemma I put myself in, I tried more to get beyond it. I was truly going the wrong way. I kept walking guys, trying to pitch that ideal pitch.

"Yesterday, I was able to throw it ahead in the count, late in the count. Keep the opposing team off my fastball."

Insisted boss Ron Washington: "I don't believe he was overthrowing. He was spreading things around with his change-up and his moving pitches. Elevated his fastball."

Washington and Nippert mutually indicated Nippert was not pitching to maintain his place in the pitching rotation. And Nippert said he'll happily start or come in from the bullpen. Seeing that the Rangers are in wild card pursuit, each player's role increases in significance.

"I simply want to contribute to this franchise," he said. "It's good for us that we have more arms currently. Whomever's playing good baseball you could choose to start.
