Guitar Lessons and How to Really Gain From Them

By Payo W Perry

Rule No.1 is you can't buy the ability to play guitar. Even if those lessons are from the best guitar teacher on the planet, they still won't make you succeed in playing guitar. It's just not that easy.

Let's take a few moments to talk about how to take responsibility for your guitar lessons and how not to waste your time and money.

Students must take charge and share in the responsibility for their own progress on guitar. It's not all up to the teacher to work magic with a weekly lesson. The vast majority of work in learning to play guitar is going to lie with you and especially with your commitment to daily practice.

Something else which will certainly help you in gaining the maximum from your guitar lessons will be knowing what you want. You would be surprised at the number of students wanting to learn guitar but don't have any real idea of what they would like to play.

By having a clear objective for the direction of your guitar lessons your tutor will be able to give you a more focused and personal service. Over time this will become more and more important since it's going to help you maintain your motivation to learn and you'll always feel that your lessons have a custom design just for you.

Taking your guitar lessons from different sources is an excellent way to speed up your progress when learning to play guitar as it offers different viewpoints and new ways of presenting information. The most popular way to combine learning would be to take private lessons with a local tutor as well as online guitar lessons. Now days there are a number of excellent guitar sites offering quality video lessons.

You could also teach yourself from guitar books or DVDs although I would advise against this in the very early stages. Generally the ability to be able to teach yourself guitar is only acquired after first taking guitar lessons with a proper tutor. Through that process you'll gain the confidence and knowledge necessary to be able to go it alone.

In closing remember that a large portion of the responsibility lies with you as the student. Take control and insist that your guitar lessons are delivering what you really need from them, don't leave it all up to your guitar tutor!
