Here Are Some Interesting Football Facts

By Eduard Schmidt

Some old and interesting football facts will reveal just how this popular sport evolved over the years, and just how long it's been around. Today, we get both soccer and NFL style football from this old and very physical game. For about 150 years it's been evolving from the 1863 English style game where the split was made from English association style football and rugby style.

The history of all styles of football is long. But with careful study, you can see the similarities that exist in them all, and sort of understand how these variations came to be. They originated from six different types of the game, which date way back. Some are believed to have evolved from military exercises in China, that in many ways resemble our modern day soccer.

The difficulty that's involved in controlling a ball with the feet was a driving force in the game of soccer, which is football overseas. It's physical challenges created a great setting for competition, where talented men came to be in demand for representing different clubs and areas in competing challenges. The ones who stood out we would equate now with our NFL stars.

Some historical records will take you back as far as ancient China. The TsuChu was an old military exercise, and it's recorded in manuals and holds a lot of the elements of soccer style football that you see today. They used this exercise by controlling and kicking a ball that was made of hair and feathers into a small pocket of net that was attached on two sides to bamboo pole. The aim was to put the ball into this net pocket, much like the soccer game you see today.

The biggest difference that has evolved between our modern football and soccer (which is also know to some as football) is the use of hands. Soccer requires the control of the ball with the feet only, while the pass, hand-off, and lateral are all functions performed with the hands in modern American NFL football. The only kicking in the NFL are the 'kickoff', the 'Field Goal', and the 'Punt'. The rest of the time the ball is either carried or passed in order to advance it.

The rules for the game of football were first laid down in 1876 at a convention, where Walter Camp, who is now hailed as the father of American style football, put them into play. From there the game progressed in popularity sparking fierce rivalry and competition amongst athletic clubs and other organizations.

His name was William (Pudge) Heffelfinger, and the Allegheny Athletic Association, known as the 'AAA', paid him the sum of $500 to compete in a game against the (PAC) Pittsburgh Athletic Club. He was a Yale man. This made him the first player to ever be paid to play football, and it took place on November 12 of 1876. He won the game by recovering a fumble and advancing the ball 35 for a touchdown.

Some very interesting football facts reveal the progression that gives us the version we have today. The game progressed to it's first signed contract in 1893. Then in 1895 a Mr. John Brallier was the first openly professional player by receiving ten dollars plus expenses to play for the Latrobe YMCA, and this was against the Jeanette Athletic Club. The original point score for a touchdown was four points, but in 1898 this was changed to five, and then later on to six. A game that's rich in history and tradition, football has changed over the years, and it has changed the fabric of America.
