Soccer requires the control of the ball with the feet only, while the pass, hand-off, and lateral are all functions performed with the hands in modern American NFL football. The only kicking in the NFL are the 'kickoff', the 'Field Goal', and the 'Punt'. The rest of the time the ball is either carried or passed in order to advance it.
The rules for the game of football were first laid down in 1876 at a convention, where Walter Camp, who is now hailed as the father of American style football, put them into play. From there the game progressed in popularity sparking fierce rivalry and competition amongst athletic clubs and other organizations.
His name was William (Pudge) Heffelfinger, and the Allegheny Athletic Association, known as the 'AAA', paid him the sum of $500 to compete in a game against the (PAC) Pittsburgh Athletic Club. He was a Yale man. This made him the first player to ever be paid to play football, and it took place on November 12 of 1876. He won the game by recovering a fumble and advancing the ball 35 for a touchdown.
